The Phleger papers include correspondence, subject files, grant records, data and films documenting Phleger's career as oceanographer and foraminiferal researcher. Contract and grant records include posstwar documenation of Office of Naval Research support for the Marine Foraminifera Laboratory at Scripps. The collection offers substantial documentation, including 22 16mm films of Phleger's trips to Baja, California Mexico to study foraminiferal populations at stations in the Gulf of California. The collection includes files on Mexican Diplomacy which document Phleger's activities as coordinator of research undertaken by Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers in Mexico. These files include correspondence with representatives of the Mexican government and universities in Mexico. Correspondents include Hans Pettersson, Clifford Ewing, Guillermo Salas.
